Sweetback Sisters to perform in Unity tonight "People bring their little kids (to our shows), they end up just dancing around, and we love it. We're just hoping people will have a good time. I really enjoy that part of our performance: that we can tailor ourselves to listeners old and new." So stated Zara Bode in a recent telephone interview from her Brooklyn, N.Y. It seems her band -- The Sweetback Sisters -- will make a stop at the Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts tonight. For more information, call 948-7469 or visit www.unityme.org/theater. The group, made up of Bode, lead vocals, guitar; Emily Miller, lead vocals, fiddle; Stefan Amidon, drums; Ross "Rolling Thunder" Bellenoit, Telecaster, vocals; Jesse Milnes, guitar, fiddle; and Bridget Kearney, bass. The group is touring in support of their Signature Sounds debut "Chicken Ain't Chicken," and the new album was one of the topics of discussion covered in the 19-minute chat. The first order of business, though, was the question of previous Maine performances: have there been any?
'Crazy Heart' goes for the gold Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) opens the film as a once upon a time country singing great, a good old whiskey soaked boy whose lungs are blacker than asphalt, and whose lips have seen a heap of cheap lipstick, and rolled out a poke of lies. Bad Blake has fallen like a wingless angel from the smoke-filled, neon-lit clouds of giant auditoriums, to the bottomless pit in loserville. Now, down on his worn handmade heels, Bad plays one nighters in bowling alleys and lunch rooms, where he drops off stage to throw up in the alley. He rides his van with his belt and fly undone and urinates in a jar to save road time. Bad is a real piece of work.
